What is The Buteyko Method?

Health Conditions

The Buteyko Method also known as the Buteyko Breathing Technique comes under the umbrella of complementary and alternative medicine (that works along side conventional medicine) and is used for the reversal of hyperventilation (from hidden hyperventilation through to Chronic Hyperventilation). Doctor KP. Buteyko discovered that chronic hyperventilation causes a number of symptoms of today's diseases, for example Asthma.

The Buteyko Method includes
1) re-education of the beliefs about how we breathe;
1a) the less you breathe, the more oxygen the brain, organs, muscles and cells will receive (ie The Bohr Effect).
1b) Carbon Dioxide (CO2) in the air we breathe out, is good for us (essential for good health).
2) a set of breathing exercises to;
2a) measure the level of your condition, symptoms and health.
2b) restore the breathing in the direction of the norm, which in turn reduces symptoms.

Both (1&2 above) developed by the late Russian Doctor Konstantin Pavlovich Buteyko. The Buteyko Method is taught as a complementary therapy and several small clinical trials have shown that it can safely reduce asthma symptoms and the need for reliever medication in some people, as well as increasing quality of life scores. However, improvement takes time and commitment, requiring daily exercises over a period of weeks or months.

Buteyko & The British Guideline on the Management of Asthma 2008
The British Guideline on the Management of Asthma 2008 grants permission for British health professionals to recommend Buteyko, stating that the method "may be considered to help patients control the symptoms of asthma". The guideline also grades clinical research on Buteyko with a 'B' classification - indicating that high quality supporting clinical trials are available. No other complementary therapy has been endorsed by this body for the treatment of asthma.
